Otava Group ranks third among graphic communications publishers in Finland. The Group's principal business areas are books, trade, magazines, and new business functions. The company was established in 1890 with the founding of Otava Publishing Company, which commenced printing operations in 1908 and magazine publishing in 1916 (Suomen Kuvalehti). Otava was a founding member of Otavamedia Ltd (1934, before known as United Magazines Ltd) and The Great Finnish Book Club Ltd (1969). These companies have been wholly owned by the Group since 1998. The Group expanded into online business with the acquisition of Plaza and NettiX Oy in 2006. Otava Ltd. purchased Suomalainen Kirjakauppa Ltd. in 2011. The Group's parent company is Otava Ltd. The Group is a private, independent, impartial, and financially sound media corporation.
